Before I was pregnant, I really had no idea how I was going to dress once it happened. I just knew I wanted to be comfortable, effortless, and still put together. Lately, I’ve been getting so many questions about how to dress during pregnancy. And now that my little guy has finally arrived, I wanted to put this maternity style guide together for you guys. Maternity style is no one-size-fits-all as everyone’s body goes through so many different changes. However, there are an endless amount of clothing items that are adaptable and, most importantly, flattering on! There is no reason you need to sacrifice style just because you are pregnant. Read on for some maternity style tips for each trimester of your pregnancy.
First Trimester
During the first trimester, your body starts going through subtle changes, which makes it easy to still wear the pieces in your wardrobe. It’s all about comfort at this point so you can get away with stretchy or flowy pieces like empire-waist dresses and tunics. If you’re in the mood to shop, you can size up in regular, non-pregnancy clothing from all your favorite brands. I’d recommend grabbing classic, everyday staples that you can still wear once your pregnancy is over!
Utility Jacket
This utility jacket is a classic staple that works year-round. I love that it can be adapted to any season and layers so well over any maternity outfit.
Reformation Tie Shoulder Dress
One of my favorite foolproof outfit combinations is an easy, stretchy midi dress paired with a chic jacket – especially leather or denim!
Mango Knit Midi Dress
This tank dress can be worn alone during the warmer seasons and then layered underneath a chunky knit through the colder months.

Second Trimester
During the next phase of pregnancy, you’ll start to have a more defined baby bump, which means it’s time to delve into maternity wear. The one piece I found myself wearing on repeat were knit midi skirts that go over the bump – they’re super cute with a t-shirt on top. You can style these pieces in so many ways with layers. Bold sunglasses are also such an easy way to keep it chic no matter what time of year it is!
Over The Belly Knit Skirt
I love wearing maternity knit skirts with non-maternity pieces in my wardrobe like basic tees, oversized blazers, and cardigans. It always makes me feel put-together and chic.
Old Navy Over The Belly Maternity Jeans (On Sale)
Over-the-belly style jeans can be surprisingly comfortable and chic once you really start to show and are great for wearing with looser tops. These Old Navy Rockstar maternity jeans have a great fit and are super comfortable to wear. The price point is also reasonable since you’ll only need them for a few months. Under-the-belly jeans are great if you prefer normal-looking jeans or want to attempt a front tuck with a basic tee.
Slip On Sneakers
This is also the perfect time to add more flats to your shoe collection. My must-haves include mule loafers, espadrille slip ons, slide sandals, and slip on sneakers. These classics come in handy because you can wear them with almost any outfit. And if you must wear heels, low block-heeled booties or pumps are always a good idea.

Third Trimester
The third trimester can be one of the hardest periods to dress for, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be stylish. There are so many cute outfits you can wear, especially with your bump at its fullest. Don’t be afraid to try out more form fitting clothing like sweater dresses in both midi and maxi lengths. Full-blown maternity dresses can be fashion forward too so don’t shy from buying a few.
Statement Cardigan
I love throwing on a trendy cardigan as well statement necklaces and scarves to dress the most basic maternity outfit.
Asos Tortoiseshell Print Dress
Take advantage of maxi dresses and smaller prints because they really do wonders in terms of slimming.
Asos Off The Shoulder Sweater Dress
This sweater dress is so chic and the soft knit will keep you comfy all day long. The color is so pretty too!
